Sacked Manchester United manager David Moyes takes charge in Spain on an
18-month contract and says he spoke to Sir Alex Ferguson before taking the
post
Just as when he took his previous job in management David Moyes spoke to Sir
Alex Ferguson. Then, the summer before last, it was when he was being
informed by the man himself that he had been chosen as his successor at
Manchester United. This time it was Moyes calling Ferguson to ask whether he
should begin the rehabilitation of his career in Spain, in La Liga and in
the Basque enclave that is the home to Real Sociedad.
“I spoke to Alex and said 'this is the opportunity that has come my way, what
do you think?’ And Alex said he felt it was a great opportunity for me,”
Moyes revealed as he stood in the tunnel area after having been presented as
La Real’s new coach, having signed an 18-month contract, and amid a buzz of
excitement. It felt like the right fit.
“I mentioned the opportunities I had had back in the UK and I felt that
probably after the way things had gone [at United] I should move away,”
Moyes added. Despite scepticism there have been Premier League offers – and
several also from abroad – for Moyes in the months since he was sacked by
United in April just nine months into the six-year contract he signed to
follow on from Ferguson.
“He spoke about the job, we talked about the opportunity, which he thought was
a great opportunity,” Moyes said. “I felt it was the right move for me and
he backed me up.”
